Welp, we’re being slammed with snow here in Pennsylvania. As I was trying to do some work at about 10 this morning, my son and his neighborhood posse came inside and peeled off their snow clothes and told me about 879 times that they were hungry.   I Wanted to Want to get off my arse and make them some hot food, but I really wanted to stay put. While I whipped up the “gourmet” cheese quesadillas, which they gratefully gobbled up as fast as I could flip them out of...

Call me a curmudgeon, but I don’t always enjoy New Year’s Eve. I can stay up until midnight with the best of them, but when it’s obligatory, I feel my rebellious nature take over and want to curl up in bed after dinner.   I think part of my ambivalence comes from the practice of making resolutions. It’s a healthy exercise in gratitude.   Of course, we should acknowledge all the positives in our lives. The discipline of speaking and writing them trains our minds to see more of the good around us.   When I was first married, I kept a gratitude journal. Each morning, I wrote five things I considered blessings. In just a few days, I ran out of the big ticket items –...

(This is a repost from March 2014) Sitting here on my loveseat wrapped in an old blanket looking at my 13-year-old daughter, who is snuggled asleep on the couch under a faded, pink Hello Kitty comforter she’s had since she was two.   She went to work at the library with me this evening to help with a kids’ program. On the drive there, we figured out that consuming hot pizza while driving is more dangerous than texting. She kept yelling at me to stop eating.   We discussed music. Listened to NoNoNo’s...
