balanced life, be present, contentment, kids, living for real, parenting / 12.08.2017

I’m counting minutes until the oven timer dings. Fourteen down. Six to go. The smell of fresh cinnamon rolls floods the house.   Earlier this month, we vacationed in Illinois with our family friends. Jill casually made cinnamon rolls for breakfast one morning (okay, they weren’t ready until lunchtime, but it was vacation, so…). I don’t do things like that. We eat cereal, bagels, eggs, whatever is easiest. Occasionally someone in the house will whip up pancakes (the “just add water” kind), but that’s as elaborate as it gets for...

It's Friday night. All my kids are home with me. I am happy. My sixteen-year-old is on the couch drinking a smoothie and watching The Office. My eleven-year-old and I just made some baked oatmeal to eat in the morning. My fourteen-year-old son is in the shower washing bleach out of his hair. Against my better judgment, I helped him slather bleach on his hair. We may be shaving his head later tonight – if he ends up with a crispy, orange hairdo. My husband is in his...

What are you looking forward to?   Three more days of school and my eleven years of walking children to the bus every morning will be over. Once the kids are in middle school, moms don’t make an appearance at the bus stop. My youngest will be a sixth grader in the fall, which is ridiculous considering she was born just yesterday.   The elementary bus runs an hour and a half behind the middle and high school bus. So, come August, all three of my babes will leave at seven in...

balanced life, be present, freedom, kids, parenting, real life / 12.04.2017

Hello. My name is JJ and I am a skimmer. I read newspaper headlines and captions. I flip through the Bible, rarely stopping to read more than a verse at a time. I read the first few entries of devotional books and then skim the rest. I bookmark professional articles but don’t return to them. I repeatedly make lists of who and what to pray for but rarely follow through in prayer.   My kids ask me questions and I don’t answer. I ask them questions and don’t remember what...

balanced life, be present, coffee, contentment, living for real, parenting / 11.01.2017

I found our kitty curled up sound asleep, nestled in a pile of blankets on the bed early this morning, so I let her be, and the bed remained unmade. I envy her sometimes – her ability to drop and sleep anywhere.   I went to the couch to drink my coffee and enjoy the slower morning. The roads were covered with a layer of ice, so school was delayed two hours. Once my body and brain begin to move, they are reluctant to slow down. But in the mornings,...
