I had a tough day recently. I was tired and gloomy. I vacillated between anxiety over responsibilities and sadness over the passing of time and how futile it is to try to stop the clock. I wanted to crawl in bed and hide. I wanted to cry. I wanted to take a mental health day and escape life.   Having a personal history of depression and anxiety and a family history of suicide, I was determined to keep a straight head. I couldn’t wallow. I couldn’t let myself break...

(Thank you Chad Harnish for this beautiful photo!) October falls into our lives every year. People bemoan the end of summer. “October already!” they say. “I can’t believe it. Where did summer go?” We are repeatedly amazed that time moves so quickly.   The daylight begins to diminish and we recall that just weeks ago the sun stayed until nearly ten.   Then it’s November.   We set back our clocks and lose even more light. Dark is sneaky, slick. It enjoys surprising us. Darkness can threaten our peace if we’re not careful. We are...

I’m embarrassed to be in the same camp as people who take drastic measures in the name of Christ. I view the world as a mash of colors and swirls and lots of grays; and though I want to so badly see sharp corners and stark differences and clear blacks and whites, I repeatedly fail in those efforts.   What do we in the Church fear? Why are we afraid of people who think differently than we do? Why do we respond with dogmatism and draw precise lines between wrong...

All through November, I hear of things which people are thankful. Some common selections are: parents, children, job, husband, house, food, friends. It’s a healthy exercise in gratitude.   Of course, we should acknowledge all the positives in our lives. The discipline of speaking and writing them trains our minds to see more of the good around us.   When I was first married, I kept a gratitude journal. Each morning, I wrote five things I considered blessings. In just a few days, I ran out of the big ticket items –...

I read an intriguing book this summer by P.J. Lazos called Six Sisters. It's really three books in one. I've included an excerpt from one of the pieces "The Quality of Light" below.   The stories are gripping and I never was able to predict what was going to happen! Delicious! I envy storytellers like P.J.   She's running a sale on the Kindle versions of her stories this weekend. On Sunday, you can buy one for just 99 cents!    Purchase her stuff here!   (An Excerpt from “The Quality of Light”) Talk to the Stones by P.J. Lazos   Doc rose from...
