Good day, my friends. It’s a beautiful snow day here in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The kids have been traipsing in and out of the house all morning, overjoyed that school is closed. Our exchange student finally got to experience a significant snowfall for the first time! The snow came overnight. The midmorning sun is now shining that crisp brightness that causes snow to glisten and sparkle like a fairytale.   For some of you who subscribe to my blog, please accept my apology for spamming you with over a hundred emails last...

When I began a new high school in a new town a thousand years ago, there was an upperclassman/popular girl/cheerleader (key to my heart) whom I looked up to. She was beautiful and smart and kind to everyone. I remember soon after she graduated, she was back at the school as a substitute teacher (and later a teacher for many years).     We became friends (thank you, Facebook) many years later and then bumped into each other (irl) at a conference. She writes and speaks and works and has four kids. I have never been able to...

I was in my dim hotel room working on a blog post about hope. My family slept deeply nearby after a long day of extreme touristing, and I sat where I could see Niagara Falls lit with colors of the rainbow. I popped over to CNN for a distraction from my writing that was going nowhere and unfortunately found there the news of Robin Williams’ death.   My heart dropped. When I read his death was most likely a suicide, my hope went out that window and evaporated with the...

My family was cuddled in the living room watching TV when the doorbell rang. It was after dark, after bedtime really. We don’t typically get visitors at night, so the kids, intrigued, threw off their blankets and raced to the door.   It was quiet – no voices. My husband said, “I think it’s for you JJ.” I reluctantly got up,  leery of the silence.   Hanging on my door was an envelope with my name. When I opened it, I found a note to me from God.    "Dear JJ, You are loved. You...

book review / 24.03.2014

I get a lot of requests for book recommendations. Though I am a highly trained, card-carrying Super Librarian and all, I typically choke when someone asks me what they should read. Everything I’ve ever read escapes my memory.   Not to mention (yet I am mentioning), we all have varying taste in books. I won't recommend Gone Girl to a Mennonite senior citizen, nor will I recommend Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers to someone who has just had a death in the family. The library patron who reads three paperback romance novels a night does...
