Yesterday, instead of waking when my 5:30 alarm sounded, I awoke late to a child with morning breath in my face saying something about something that was happening after school. Oops. I missed my whole morning routine and barely had time to say good-bye to the two big kids who leave at 7:00.   On the first day of 2016, I read a friend’s Facebook post about her habit of listening to the Bible every morning. In 2015, she made it through the entire Bible. Because I have optimistically embarked...

My bedroom smells like paint from my current “I’m sick of beige walls, so let’s change everything” project. Strong odors give me headaches, so I was glad to come downstairs this morning and snuggle in my happy space with coffee and the news. I enjoy the early quiet in my house, my favorite time of day.   Welp, we’re being slammed with snow here in Pennsylvania. As I was trying to do some work at about 10 this morning, my son and his neighborhood posse came inside and peeled off their snow clothes and told me about 879 times that they were hungry.   I Wanted to Want to get off my arse and make them some hot food, but I really wanted to stay put. While I whipped up the “gourmet” cheese quesadillas, which they gratefully gobbled up as fast as I could flip them out of...

Call me a curmudgeon, but I don’t always enjoy New Year’s Eve. I can stay up until midnight with the best of them, but when it’s obligatory, I feel my rebellious nature take over and want to curl up in bed after dinner.   I think part of my ambivalence comes from the practice of making resolutions. I am a goal-setter so this should appeal to me, but I never fully embraced this ritual. From one day to the next is so arbitrary – sure it’s a new year, but...
