Recently I heard someone tell about an adoption of a special needs child from another country. He explained some of the parents’ arduous and expensive, heartfelt process, and then said, “Imagine the joy…” as he described how the child must have felt about being adopted. The little boy would be loved unconditionally and taken care of his whole life. He would experience privileges in this country that he would never have had a chance for in his home country.   Though I completely understood his point, all I could think about...

Writer Shawn Smucker has a series on his blog called "Letters To Those We've Lost" where he features letters from guests. Some of the letters were so powerful and beautiful, I decided to write my own. Sometimes writing a few paragraphs takes me hours, but this letter took about 15 minutes to come out of me. I guess I was ready to say it!   Dear Mom,   The last time I spoke to you was from the phone in Jeff’s apartment. I loved hanging out there with him, my big brother. I called to tell you...

Call me a curmudgeon, but I don’t always enjoy New Year’s Eve. I can stay up until midnight with the best of them, but when it’s obligatory, I feel my rebellious nature take over and want to curl up in bed after dinner.   I think part of my ambivalence comes from the practice of making resolutions.   I really just wanted time to read and drink my coffee before my day began. Morning is the time of day where I am most creative and thoughtful; and every morning, I crave more minutes with books, Bible, journal, and coffee.   This reflective time is why I wake early – I always plan to exercise at the YMCA and then sit and soak in the calm that comes from silence and soak up the energy that comes from coffee. I want more minutes before kid stuff, work stuff, house...

I read an intriguing book this summer by P.J. Lazos called Six Sisters. It's really three books in one. I've included an excerpt from one of the pieces "The Quality of Light" below.   The stories are gripping and I never was able to predict what was going to happen! Delicious! I envy storytellers like P.J.   She's running a sale on the Kindle versions of her stories this weekend. On Sunday, you can buy one for just 99 cents!    Purchase her stuff here!   (An Excerpt from “The Quality of Light”) Talk to the Stones by P.J. Lazos   Doc rose from...
